Ford #4 viscosity cups are the most common cup used for testing paint viscosity and are commonly referenced by coating manufacturers with regards to testing coatings before being applied. 

Generally painting contractors will use Ford #4 viscosity cups for checking the viscosity of paint after it has been thinned. This simple test is a quick way of checking that the paint has been mixed correctly.
